Trainee Locomotive Driver Program

ARG is strongly committed to developing and training people within the rail industry. We have a competency based training program designed to take those with limited or no rail experience and provide them with the training and skills to become a fully qualified locomotive driver.

The training program typically takes 18 to 24 months to complete and during this period you will be employed on a full time basis with ARG.

Upon commencement in a Trainee Locomotive Driver role you will begin training towards a nationally recognised qualification, Certificate IV Transport and Logistics. The training and qualification will provide you with practical skills whilst working and studying towards becoming a qualified Locomotive Driver.

While rail experience is not necessary, there are some essential requirements you will need to comply with. These are:

  • Possession of an unrestricted motor vehicle drivers license
  • Successfully passing a Rail Safety Critical Worker Health Assessment

It is also desirable that applicants have experience in working shift work and posses a good electrical and/ or mechanical aptitude.

Application Process

To become a Locomotive Driver with ARG you must apply for a Traineeship with the company. This can be done by clicking on the Current Vacancies menu where you can apply for a current advertised trainee position.

You should have a current resume/cv outlining your background, skills and experience that can be submitted to ARG when prompted.

The Trainee Locomotive Driver recruitment intake is generally undertaken twice a year and most positions are located in regional depots.
